EasyStreet Hosted Exchange Frequently Asked Questions

Back

Can I get mail from my work computer at home? On the road?

Yes. With Hosted Exchange, you can securely check email from any Internet connection as if you were at your office computer. Two-way synching is supported for Outlook Web Access (OWA) and for mobile devices, including Blackberry, Palm and Smartphone.

Why should I use Hosted Exchange instead of an in-house mail server?

The primary reason is cost. With Hosted Exchange, any hardware, software, technical support, administration and maintenance are included in a single monthly cost. EasyStreet handles the maintenance, patching and upgrading of the server, ensuring outstanding security and reliability as well as providing all features from the latest version of Exchange. Another advantage is free, 24/7 local technical support, so admins and end users can get free help anywhere, at any time.

How is Hosted Exchange different from a POP3 email account?

Hosted Exchange is as easy to use as a POP3 mailbox, and it works with Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007. EasyStreet Hosted Exchange offers additional advantages: seamless access from multiple computers or devices, and powerful group collaboration features.

Does this work with PCs and Macs?

While Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 for PCs is the recommended client, Entourage 2004 is also fully supported.

Can I use Outlook, my email client, with this service?

Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 is the recommended client. A free license for each user is included with Hosted Exchange services. Older versions of Outlook may be compatible but are not supported.

Does remote access require a VPN connection?

It is no longer necessary to use a VPN connection to securely check mail from a remote connection. RPC over HTTPS offers secure two-way synchronization. There is no need to use nonstandard ports.

I have Exchange 5.5. Is 2003 different?

In addition to the features of 5.5, 2003 offers:

  • Outlook Web Access (OWA): A secure web version of Outlook, nearly identical in appearance and functionality, including support for rules, spell-check and secure messaging.
  • Outlook Mobile Access (OMA): Access Outlook from mobile devices for synchronization over a secure wireless connection.
  • Cached mode: A locally stored data file is used for all Outlook foreground activity, creating a faster user experience and providing a backup copy of important data.
  • RPC over HTTPS: Eliminates the need for VPN when accessing from remote connections.

How do I migrate mail to your system? Will I need to change my email address? Will any mail be lost?

EasyStreet's technical staff can assist in making a smooth transition, with no need to change email addresses or lose/bounce email. First, users will save their email into a PST file. When the Exchange account is set up on the mail client, the user can import the data from the PST.

How can this solution save me money?

Hardware, software, technical support, administration and maintenance are built into the low monthly cost. No outside consultants are required and only minimal on-site administration is required, freeing up internal IT resources.

What training will I need?

EasyStreet will schedule initial training for your administrator, showing how to use the control panel and set up users. EasyStreet's technical support is also available for end users. Users who already use Outlook 2003 or 2007 will not require any training to begin using EasyStreet Hosted Exchange email.

Is it secure and reliable?

Security and reliability are at the forefront of EasyStreet Hosted Exchange. All email sent through Outlook 2003 or 2007, Outlook Web Access or mobile devices is secure through SSL or RPC over HTTPS. The servers reside in the fortified EasyStreet Data Center high physical security. Network activity is proactively monitored to catch issues before they become problems.

What about spam and virus protection?

Basic anti-virus protection is included for all mailboxes. Optional basic server-side anti-spam protection filters spam into a junk mail folder for each user. EasyStreet recommends optional advanced anti-spam/anti-virus protection with individually adjustable levels of sensitivity for each mailbox.

How often is my data backed up?

EasyStreet backs up the Hosted Exchange service daily to tape with a two-day retention. There is a $200 restore data charge. Restoration typically takes a half business day.

In addition, Hosted Exchange has the built-in ability to restore "hard deleted" items (such as e-mails, contacts, etc.) that were deleted from a folder via Outlook or WebMail. These deleted items are only available for two days after you've done a hard delete.
